What Lies Behind the Wall

A: “What do you do?”

B: “I’m a sales rep at Google.”

A: “Oh — cool! I used your product before.”

C: FACEPALM

It’s hard to be vulnerable around near strangers, colleagues and (even) friends. I’ll tell you from my limited slice of the human experience that opening myself up to the world has resulted in a better state than trying to show some facade of complete control.

If you think in Buddhist(ish) metaphors, too — consider this one I’m riffing on.

We all build walls around ourselves. A facade that protects us. Others can’t attach to a perfect sleek wall. They can only gaze at it and think “oh, that’s beautiful” and pass by. We attach to the bumps, the crevices, the imperfections in one another’s wall. They are what allow them to hook in, explore the surface and climb over to see you standing behind it.

If you prefer tweetvice:

  • Perfection is boring
  • Linear stories don’t get butts in seats

TLDR; Be open to the world. Being vulnerable isn’t a bad or scary thing. If you believe in the idea of ‘weak’ and ‘strong’ people than remind yourself that weak people fear emotion while strong people observe and transform them.

Anywho — have a good weekend.
