Dear Facebook, let me tag people I’m “thinking of”

Posts and photos require more subtle notification methods.

I’m tired of people tagging me in photos and posts because they want to bring it to my attention. I’m equally tired of “with” tag spam when people aren’t actually with me.

My request is for a feature I’ll call, “thinking of.” It’s similar to “with” only, it only notifies the people and doesn’t include the tagged persons’ audiences.

People listed in “thinking of” section should be listed as they are with likes or “with” and they should be able to de-tag themselves if they wish.

Adding “thinking of,” can accomplish several things.

  1. It will put social pressure on tag spammers who claim to use tagging as a notification method to use the more subtle “thinking of.”
  2. Improves the authenticity of the posts as they won’t be listing people who aren’t in the photo or have very little to do with the post.
  3. People, like myself, would feel comfortable listing people in “thinking of” when we’d never use “with” or in post tagging.
  4. Allows simpler, on-the-fly, open group conversations where others can serendipitously drop in.
  5. For Facebook, it improves the quality of the graph as it’s a signal for a relationship strength and mutual interest in whatever content is being shared.

Alternatively, we can meet in the middle and I’d appreciate the ability to have a checkbox when I use “with” or in-line tags to decide not to attempt to re-share to their pages.

Thank you for your consideration.
