What searches could they do better than Google other than people search?

Not a direct answer to the question, but I don’t think social search is very valuable outside of people search.

The manner in which Facebook collects information about its users is not very helpful for most internet searches. Most searches have very little to do with broad aspects of a person’s character, tastes, social network, and education/employment history.

I think that Facebook could incrementally benefit an existing search algorithm. So, Facebook + Yahoo would be better than Yahoo alone, but the quality of Yahoo’s algorithm is much more indicative of the quality of search results.

Perhaps it’s just my inability to come up with answers to the question above that lead me to this perspective.
