I attended ScienceOnline in Raleigh (#scio13 on Twitter) and was glad to see Cherilyn Jose (http://twitter.com/protectoceans) evangelizing the Blue Marble project.
This movement is a wonderful example of creating a positive emotional connections to the ocean and its conservation rather than the alternative fear-driven message. I was lucky enough to have selected a table where Cherilyn shared the story and passed on the blue marbles and, as expected, everyone started sharing their own stories with one another. The impact didn’t end there, in addition to the one-to-one stories, many shared them online including the co-founder of science online Bora Zivkovic (http://twitter.com/boraz) and others.
I’ve attached a Storify and a link to Wallace J. Nichols’ website to learn more about the project.
What other projects or campaigns are putting a positive spin on ocean conservation?
P.S. ScienceOnline is a non-profit organization that facilitates conversations, community, and collaborations at the intersection of Science and the Web. There were over 450 scientists, science communicators, and science lovers in attendance. Learn more at (http://scienceonline.com/about/).
