🔗 GetGlue acquired by Viggle in social TV startup merger (Article)

Viggle acquires GetGlue and their 33 employess for $25M in cash and 48.3M in stock, in hopes of becoming a “dominant force in the exploding social TV market.”

Both companies have offerings that enable their users to engage with one another during the tune in experience. The second screen is a hotly fought for market. Twitter and Facebook are clearly ahead; however, GetGlue claims for many TV episodes they have more activity.

Is this the future of social TV?

I think that just checking in is a small but potential start. The question is, how do you provide a different and more content centered experience for the user, over the simple and already established facebook and twitter networks. I know working on a show, we have been trying to figure out how to take advantage of the second screen and interact with our audience, and give them a more in depth experience with the show. Something like the Game of Thrones Experience on HBO GO http://bit.ly/U4QS6r but with live viewing and social interactions would be something optimal I would think.

Off topic, but, urg!! Looks like there’s a bug in the link parser!

Have you worked with or used GetGlue or Viggle for work?

We’ve done some of the stickers for GetGlue, but I wasn’t part of that. We’ve experimented with a live interactive experience, but its a conundrum to keep it social, yet manage different time zone premiere times, and prevent spoilers etc.

Old media embargos, copyrights and what not all seem to need to go the way of the dinosaur. It makes it über hard to adapt to the sharing + remixing culture that’s become prevalent.
