Should Microsoft ditch the Windows brand?

🔗 Microsoft urged to ditch Windows brand by Dell (Article)
Bill Gates said, “People everywhere love Windows,” but it seems that Dell isn’t loving it very much. The iconic brand which helped bring computing to the masses is getting a lesson in branding from Top Dell executives.
The main concern is around the fact that Windows RT cannot run all Windows applications which is going to be confusing to consumers.
Steve Ballmer believes in the brand and doesn’t think that Windows RT is best served to rebrand and start from scratch.
The broader question is whether it’s in Microsoft’s best interests to begin to rebrand their new operating systems entirely.
Should they ditch or say the course?

Yes- it has hurt the launch of Windows Phone which people seem to genuinely like except for the fact that MSFT isn’t cool anymore.

Been a while since Windows was cool!
Although I’m a believer that better products will eventually win; I also think that, in this case, a re-brand would really help them out. It will really hurt MSFT if they lose their partners like Dell, et al. Without consumer confidence in the brand the PC ecosystem will die and make way for Android or Apple to swoop in with a solution.

Has Xfinity helped Comcast’s brand?

If you look at the correlation between the Xfinity brand in search and their stock price, yes! They’re both trending up and to the right since XFinity came to being in 2010.

I realize this is correlation and not a causal link. But, it’s all I have.

Microsoft is not good at branding. It’s a good idea, just not for Microsoft. All they do is throw money at it as if that equates to good branding. I still face palm whenever I see Bing.
Their brand sucks for a reason. They need to fix that first, or else it’s going to follow them to any new brand.
