There is a lot that’s been going on in the last two weeks since my last summary update and I thought I’d share a quick summary of work from members of this community and beyond.
Work from the Community
Sen. Kevin Ranker helped push the first ocean acidification legislation through the Washington State senate (http://daily.sightline.org/2013/02/06/was-first-ocean-acidification-legislation/).
David Schiffman announced that in affiliation with ScienceOnline, he will be launching ScienceOnline Oceans (http://oceans.scienceonline.com). It will be an oceans focused science communication conference in Miami Oct 11th - 13th. Follow @ScioOceans / #sciooceans on Twitter.
Also, if you want to enjoy an awesome laugh read David’s Valentine’s Day post: “50 Shades of Grey Reef Shark…”: http://www.southernfriedscience.com/?p=14393
Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson added a second post to her shiny new NatGeo blog, titled “More Marine Protected Areas Coming Soon to the Bahamas?” (https://bitly.com/NGBlog2). She discusses what she learned as she toured the islands with local conservation orgs and high-level policy officials.
Andrew Thaleris touring the Caymen vents and has been posting images and quips about his deep sea adventures. You can follow him on Twitter @SFFriedScientist or follow his trip’s hashtag #DeepestVents. Here’s a longer-form update he recently posted: http://www.southernfriedscience.com/?p=14407
Dr. Wallace J. Nichols and conservationists from 75 countries attended the 33rd Annual Symposium on Sea Turtle Biology and Conservation in Baltimore Feb 2nd - 8th (http://nationalaquarium.wordpress.com/2013/02/04/scientists-gather-in-baltimore-for-international-se… If anyone has good blog post summaries or Storify of the event; please share in the responses. Next year’s symposium will be in New Orleans.
Many of you are at the #AAASMtg and I’m hopeful some of you will share what you’ve learned from it as well.
Do you know who Daylin Leach is?
Daylin Leach introduced legislation to the PA State Senate “to ban the possession of illegally-obtained shark fins**.”**It’s not a comprehensive ban but it’s a start. It unanimously passed the judiciary committee on 2/12 and now goes to the state senate. Just checked his announcement tweet and, incredibly, no one is giving him love:(https://twitter.com/daylinleach/status/301401854133288962). I’m about to go high-five him when I’m done with this post.
What else is going on? Have you had a little victory?
Share what you’re working on, what problems you’re having and issues you think need highlighted.
