We built this community around a single question. “Who do we need to bring together to make a real impact in ocean conservation?” With that in mind, we brought together experts in conservation, activism, marine science, international economics, and policy.
Dr. Ayana Johnson –Marine Biologist, Director of Science and Solutions Waitt Foundation. Recently listed on Dell’s exclusive top 100 “World Changers” list. Ayana was also the inspiration for this community.
Senator Kevin Ranker –State Senator for Washington, Surfrider Board member, long-time Ocean Conservationist. Recently recognized by the Ocean Foundation as an “Ocean Hero” for his leadership in marine conservation and on critical ocean issues.
Dr. Miguel Jorge –Director of National Geographic Society’s Ocean Initiative and Aspen Environment Forum alum. Previously Miguel spent 12 years with WWF as Director of WWF’s International Marine Program, where he oversaw the WWF-Network’s global strategies on fisheries and seafood, shipping and high-seas conservation policy.
Dr. Chad Nelsen – Environmental Director at Surfrider, ocean lover and long-time surfer. He has been grassroots campaigning around ocean conservation issues for over a decade.
Dr. Stephanie Wear – Director of Reef Conservation at the Nature Conservancy. One of the first people to speak to me about a need to bring conservationists together.
Rachel Weidinger –Director of Upwell, ocean activist, the voice of the ocean and social media maven.
Marcela Gutiérrez —Director of Azul and long-time activist. She has worked tirelessly to galvanize the latino community around conservation and sustainability issues.
Amanda Feuerstein —Co-Author of Citizens at Sea, contributor for Smithsonian Ocean Portal, and will soon be sharing and documenting success stories in ocean conservation for Conservation International.
Dr. Kristen Honey —Marine biologist and interdisciplinary scientist with the E-IPER department at Stanford University. Passionate about creating sustainable fisheries and working waterfronts in collaboration with fishermen who sometimes best know these ocean systems.

Thayer Walker –Conservationist, master of building community, ocean lover, adventurer and part owner of a ski mountain in Utah.
Dr. Dawn Wright — Chief Scientist at ESRI on sabbatical from teaching at University of Oregon. Dawn is an ocean scientist, geographer, and geographic information system (GIS) author.
Dr. Jeff Wescott– Cultural anthropologist and ocean conservation activist with Waitt Foundation.
Katy Seto —MAS, LEED™ AP is a Doctoral Student at UC Berkeley in the Environmental Science, Policy, and Management Department. Her research focuses on the relationship between civil conflict and marine resources, as well as marine resource management in post-conflict Sub-Saharan Africa.
Rahel Marsie-Hazen —Communications role at Environmental Defense Fund. Responsible for advancing the development and implementation of catch share programs and sustainable fisheries worldwide.
Krisofer Lofgren — Owner of Bamboo Sushi, the first sustainable sushi restaurant.
